United States 1976 — 2 Dollars Federal Reserve Note, Richmond District (Friedberg 1935-E) Bicentennial Issue, Courtesy Autograph by Treasurer Francine Neff, PMG 66 EPQ Gem Uncirculated

The Bicentennial of 1976 marked two hundred years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It was not a single day but a coordinated year-long program of events, parades, museum exhibitions, and national symbolism. Every federal agency participated. The Treasury chose to revive the long-dormant $2 denomination as its contribution to the festivities, creating the first and only circulating paper-money commemorative in United States history. By re-introducing the Jefferson note, the government hoped to give every citizen an affordable keepsake of the nation’s 200th birthday—a piece of the celebration that could pass through ordinary hands.

The Bicentennial of 1976 marked two hundred years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and the United States launched an unprecedented year-long national celebration. Every federal agency participated in some form, and the Treasury Department’s contribution was the revival of the $2 denomination, dormant for a decade. Reintroduced on April 13 1976—Thomas Jefferson’s birthday—the new note was released with an entirely re-engraved reverse featuring John Trumbull’s 1818 painting *The Signing of the Declaration of Independence*. It was designed to link the nation’s modern identity to its revolutionary origins, making it the first and only circulating paper-money commemorative ever issued by the United States.

The Bicentennial of 1776-1976 was the most ambitious patriotic celebration since World War II—a full-year acknowledgment of two centuries of independence, democracy, and national identity. Rather than minting an expensive collector coin, the Treasury chose a gesture every American could share: it revived the $2 bill, dormant since 1966, and reissued it as the *Bicentennial Note.* Released on April 13 1976, Thomas Jefferson’s birthday, the new design paired Jefferson’s portrait with John Trumbull’s 1818 depiction of *The Signing of the Declaration of Independence.* The note became both practical currency and an official souvenir of the nation’s 200-year milestone.
