Description and research notes

This uncut vertical sheet of four 10 Centavos notes was issued by the Ayuntamiento (municipal council) of Zitácuaro in the state of Michoacán during the Mexican Revolution. Catalogued as M2952c, the issue belongs to the wave of emergency municipal currencies produced throughout Mexico between 1914 and 1916 when the collapse of the national monetary system created an acute shortage of small change.

During the revolutionary conflict, the circulation of federal coinage and banknotes was severely disrupted. Local governments, merchants, and military authorities responded by authorizing provisional paper money commonly known as 'bilimbiques.' Municipal councils such as the Ayuntamiento de Zitácuaro printed their own fractional notes to keep everyday commerce functioning in markets and local trade.

The present sheet preserves four consecutive notes numbered in blue ink from 1124 through 1127. The numbering was applied after printing, a typical practice in revolutionary municipal issues where sheets were produced locally and then hand-numbered before release. The slightly uneven placement of the numbers reflects this manual finishing stage and provides direct evidence of the improvised production methods used during the period.

The design itself is intentionally simple, consisting of bold typography within a rectangular border bearing the inscription 'AYUNTAMIENTO DE LA H. ZITÁCUARO.' The abbreviation 'H.' stands for 'Honorable,' the formal designation of the municipal council, emphasizing that the issue was authorized by the local government rather than by private merchants. The denomination '10 Centavos' appears prominently to ensure quick recognition in daily transactions.

Printed four-up on thin local stock, the sheet reveals the original production layout intended for manual cutting prior to circulation. Most surviving examples of Zitácuaro municipal notes were separated for use during the revolution, making intact sheets exceptionally scarce. The preserved format here documents both the numbering sequence and the municipal printing method employed in Michoacán’s revolutionary economy.

As an artifact, the sheet illustrates how local authorities temporarily replaced national currency systems with municipal credit instruments backed by civic authority and local trust. It stands as a rare surviving witness to the decentralized monetary practices that emerged across Mexico during the upheaval of the revolution.
