Description and research notes
Issued 5 Reais note from Banco Central do Brasil, dated 2010, bearing the classic República effigy at left and modern Brazilian fauna reverse. Printed by Casa da Moeda do Brasil (CdM-B), this note carries the signatures of E. Guardia and I. Goldfajn and prefix FK.
When first reported, the combination of date, signature pair, and prefix had not yet been recorded in the Standard Catalog of World Paper Money, appearing in grading-service population reports as 'Pick Unlisted'. Later research confirmed its identity within the definitive 2010 polymer-style paper series and catalogued it as Pick 253d.
The 2010 issue marked the first phase of Brazil’s 'Segunda Família do Real'—a complete redesign with tactile features for the visually impaired, new size differentials between denominations, and enhanced color contrast for circulation durability. Each note continues the theme of the allegorical República head first adopted in 1994, linking classical imagery to a thoroughly modern security package.
This example demonstrates how catalog discovery evolves: transitional printings such as this bridge unrecorded production batches with officially recognized series entries, making them valuable benchmarks for modern numismatic documentation.
