Description and research notes

Blank watermarked paper stock prepared for Confederate Treasury note production during the Civil War period, certified by PCGS as CSA Watermarked Paper.

This archival sheet represents original Confederate paper bearing the large embedded 'CSA' watermark, visible under transmitted light. The watermark was introduced as a security measure in the Confederacy’s later issues, particularly during 1864 production, as counterfeiting became increasingly widespread under wartime conditions.

Unlike printed notes, this specimen preserves the raw paper substrate before engraving and overprint were applied. The absence of denomination and serial number confirms its role as base security stock rather than a finished instrument of circulation. The watermark is impressed directly into the paper fibers during manufacture, serving both as anti-counterfeiting protection and as an assertion of Confederate governmental authority.

Watermarked Confederate paper is scarce because the majority of stock was consumed in active note production or lost during the economic collapse of 1865. Surviving certified examples provide direct physical evidence of Confederate papermaking and security methodology during the final year of the Civil War.

Certified PCGS Banknote 65 PPQ Gem Uncirculated, this example retains pristine paper integrity and sharply defined watermark embossing. As archival production material rather than issued currency, it stands as foundational documentation of Confederate security paper development.
