Description and research notes
Replacement note for the 2005 Northern Bank £50 issue, printed by Thomas De La Rue, bearing the distinct 'YY' prefix used exclusively for replacement sheets following the 2004 Belfast vault robbery. These notes were part of the emergency replacement program that saw all pre-robbery stock withdrawn and destroyed, with new serial ranges produced under enhanced security oversight.
Featuring the portrait of Sir Samuel Cleland Davidson (1846–1921), inventor and industrialist, the design celebrates Northern Ireland’s engineering legacy. The Sirocco Works turbine engraving appears at left, representing Davidson’s innovations in ventilation and power systems. The complex guilloche patterns, raised intaglio text, and multi-tone palette of violet and copper were devised to prevent counterfeiting and distinguish the reissued series from the compromised pre-robbery notes.
Replacement notes such as this are among the rarest 2005 Northern Bank issues. The 'YY' prefix was reserved for internal control and used only when a regular production sheet was damaged or spoiled during printing. Fewer than a few thousand replacement £50s are estimated to have been released, making this an exceptional survivor of Northern Ireland’s most infamous banking episode.
