Ireland’s paper-money history spans private-bank note issue, regional sterling banking and later modern security printing. The material in this section follows that wider tradition through issued notes, proofs, specimens, remainders and production material connected with banks operating in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Commercial issuers such as Ulster Bank Limited, Northern Bank, Belfast Banking Company Limited, Bank of Ireland Limited and Provincial Bank of Ireland Limited used banknotes not only as payment instruments, but also as engraved statements of institutional authority, local identity and trust.

Early private-bank and regional issues often combine ornate lettering, maritime and industrial vignettes, armorial devices, security paper and carefully controlled printer work. Proofs and specimens preserve these designs in a form close to production and approval, showing details that ordinary issued notes often lose through circulation, trimming or handling. Sheet material, watermarked paper and specimen perforations add another layer, documenting how the notes were prepared before they entered, or were withheld from, public use.

The later Northern Ireland sterling issues continue the same regional banking tradition in a modern security-printing environment. Printer attributions, replacement prefixes, specimen controls, bank-title changes and redesigns all form part of the collecting story. The printer imprint at the lower margin reads Charles Skipper and East Limited, London, identifying the specialist security printer responsible for the engraved proof. PMG records only one graded example for Pick 388p, and this PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated proof is that sole recorded example. Its population 1 status places it at the highest visible rarity level for the catalog number and supports its classification as an R9 Extremely Rare proof survivor.
