Description and research notes
Specimen from the same unreleased 1982 emergency series, a mid-denomination companion to the 1000 Francs. Technically, it showcases Bradbury Wilkinson’s mastery in translating classical portraiture into secure banknote design: deep-bite intaglio with an even ink film, perfectly registered with offset underprint that keeps micro-lines open at every pressure setting. PMG 66 EPQ Gem Uncirculated.
Its story bridges policy and craftsmanship. After the BLEU devaluation, Luxembourg drafted this 500 Francs as the backbone of a stand-alone currency—maintaining the union’s visual parity but carrying national signatures. The plates were completed and archived, never issued once confidence in joint production returned. Only archival SPECIMENs like this survived, forming the physical narrative link between the functioning BLEU issues of the 1970s and the unrealized independent notes of the 1980s. Together with the 1000 Francs proofs, it closes the circle on Luxembourg’s last flirtation with full monetary autonomy.
