Description and research notes

Specimen of the 1982 five hundred francs issue of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, forming the structural backbone denomination within the unissued contingency series. While the 1000 Francs defines the apex, the 500 Francs represents the operational core of the intended circulation system, designed for real transactional use had the issue been released.

This example carries serial number A000000 096, presented in standard specimen format with duplicated placement at left and right. A red diagonal 'SPECIMEN' overprint is applied across the central design, accompanied by two punch-hole cancellations positioned through the lower signature area. These elements confirm its role as a controlled specimen used for production validation and internal reference.

Printed by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Company, Limited, the note reflects the same high-level engraving and security structure seen in the 1000 Francs, translated into a denomination intended for broader circulation density. The portrait of Grand Duchess Charlotte is executed in finely controlled intaglio, supported by layered guilloche patterns and a balanced ornamental framework optimized for both clarity and resistance to reproduction.

The issue originates from Luxembourg’s contingency preparation during instability within the Belgian Luxembourg Economic Union in the early 1980s. The 500 Francs was positioned as a key working denomination within a potential independent currency system, bridging everyday use and higher-value settlement functions.

Within the structure of the series, this specimen represents the finalized production stage—following proof development and preceding any theoretical circulation. It stands alongside the 1000 Francs specimen and color trials as part of a complete but unrealized monetary system.

The note remains in Gem Uncirculated condition with exceptional paper quality, preserving strong embossing, sharp print detail, and full clarity of all specimen control elements.
