Description and research notes
Later departmental variety of the 1887 Banco Nacional 20 Centésimos carrying the red CANELONES overprint across the obverse. The stamp authenticated handling by the Canelones branch, one of Uruguay’s main agricultural centers. The underlying Waterlow & Sons design with Mercury and the intricate green reverse remains identical to other issues.
Serial H092503 shows the same trio of autographs—Vittone, Bugliam and Giménez—in lighter hand. The CANELONES stamp uses narrower type and a cleaner impression, implying a separate hand-set press and slightly later application. PMG lists seven graded examples, highest 25 VF.
Cataloged Pick A88b / PMG A88b (Canelones Overprint). Fourth in the 1887 set, illustrating the second provincial mark and the expansion of branch validation across Uruguay before later plain reprints.
