Description and research notes

Typography and layout test prepared for the Tesouro Nacional, featuring the arced inscription 'TESOURO NACIONAL' and upper legend 'VALOR LEGAL'. Printed without denomination or date on thin archival paper, this undated printer’s trial was created to evaluate font weight, curvature, and typographic balance for potential note headers.

During the 1960s, Brazil’s currency authorities frequently requested printer samples to refine the national identity of Tesouro Nacional issues. Such 'Valor Legal' tests were part of that process, functioning as mock-ups for the placement of statutory wording required on all circulating paper money. These were not design proofs for a specific note but exercises in proportion and composition, testing the visual hierarchy of textual elements.

This example, graded PCGS 53 PPQ (About New), represents an extremely rare survival of the developmental phase of Brazil’s printing program—an ephemeral but vital record of how the country’s currency evolved typographically before the definitive Cruzeiro issues of the later 1960s.
