Description and research notes
This 1996 five dollars specimen of the Cayman Islands Currency Board belongs to the revised series issued under the Cayman Islands Currency Law (Revised) and printed by Thomas De La Rue and Company Limited. Unlike the earlier 1974 phase, this series reflects the modernized design language of the late twentieth century while retaining the institutional discipline characteristic of the Currency Board system.
The specimen format is defined by a layered invalidation protocol. A bold red diagonal SPECIMEN overprint spans the face of the note, accompanied by two red oval control stamps reading “SPECIMEN / DE LA RUE / NO VALUE,” applied in the standard De La Rue archival format. A single punch cancellation in the signature area provides additional physical voiding, permanently removing monetary function while preserving the engraved design in full clarity.
The note carries the all-zero specimen serial format with prefix B/1 and internal control number 001, with the printed tracking panel “SPECIMEN No. 001” at the lower margin. This serial structure is administrative rather than circulatory, identifying the piece as managed specimen material within De La Rue’s controlled accounting sequence.
Beneath the denomination panel appears the engraved signature of G. A. McCarthy, serving as Chairman of the Cayman Islands Currency Board during the 1996 revised series. The presence of McCarthy’s signature firmly situates this specimen within the later administrative phase of Cayman currency development and distinguishes it from earlier Johnson or Jefferson-signed issues.
The reverse presents a more colorful marine composition than the earlier series, featuring coral forms, shell motifs, and a sailing vessel framed within structured denomination panels. De La Rue’s intaglio linework remains disciplined and security-oriented, combining ornamental marine symbolism with layered geometric engraving intended to resist reproduction while maintaining immediate visual authority.
As a curatorial object, this specimen documents the fully authorized 1996 five dollars design in a controlled, permanently invalidated state. The combination of specimen overprint, dual De La Rue control stamps, punch cancellation, and archival annotations records not merely a non-circulating note, but a complete specimen-handling protocol within the De La Rue production and documentation system.
