Description and research notes

This official printer specimen of the 5000 Denari belongs to the inaugural post-independence banknote series of the Republic of Macedonia, introduced in 1996 by the National Bank of the Republic of Macedonia. The series was produced by Thomas De La Rue & Company Limited of London, whose security printing program established the technical and visual identity of the country’s modern currency.

The note preserves the full design of the circulating denomination while being permanently invalidated through De La Rue’s specimen control procedures. A bold red diagonal SPECIMEN overprint crosses the face of the note, accompanied by an oval printer control stamp reading “DE LA RUE & CO LTD / NO VALUE.” Two punch cancellations are applied to the signature panel to ensure the note could never circulate as money while leaving the engraved composition fully visible for reference.

The serial format EA0000000 represents De La Rue’s standard specimen control numbering convention. Instead of a normal circulating serial, all digits are replaced with zeros to identify the note as a printer distribution copy. Separate from this control serial is the printed tracking number “SPECIMEN No. 006,” which records the specimen’s position within the printer’s internal distribution sequence supplied to central banks, archives, and technical reference collections.

At the center of the design appears the Maenad figure, derived from a classical bronze sculpture discovered at the archaeological site of Heraclea Lyncestis. The dancer’s dynamic posture symbolizes movement and vitality and became the defining icon of the denomination. The same Maenad motif is incorporated into the watermark of issued notes, linking the artistic centerpiece of the design with one of the banknote’s primary security devices.

Specimen notes such as this document the final approved configuration of the banknote before circulation release. They record the exact engraving, color register, watermark placement, and security architecture delivered by the printer to the issuing authority. Within the documented production sequence of the 5000 Denari denomination, the specimen stage bridges the earlier engraving and photographic proof materials with the fully issued notes that entered circulation.

Certified PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated, this example retains sharp original color, crisp printing detail, and undisturbed paper surfaces. The punch cancels, specimen overprint, and control numbering are intrinsic elements of the specimen format itself and reflect the note’s function as an official printer verification and archival reference piece rather than a circulating instrument of currency.
