Paraguay 1907 - 100 Pesos with 1912 Dual-Side State and Treasury Revalidation Overprint Specimen (Pick Unlisted)

Archival specimen of the 1907 Banco de la República 100 Pesos, base Pick 159, printed by Waterlow & Sons, London, and later transformed by one of the most historically revealing emergency overprint configurations in Paraguayan paper money. The note bears the large face overprint “Emisión del Estado – 11 de Enero de 1912,” together with the reverse fiscal validation “Departamento de Hacienda – Junta Fiscalizadora – Diez Pesos Oro Sellado – Conforme Decreto de 20 de Mayo 1912.” This dual-side treatment places the note outside the ordinary single-face revalidation pattern and identifies it as a treasury-controlled specimen of exceptional documentary importance. Paraguay 1907 - 100 Pesos with 1912 State Overprint (Pick 134, Base Pick 159)

This makes the note a key witness to the difference between ordinary bank circulation and government-backed emergency validation. The original 1907 design already carried the important value clause “Moneda Nacional ó Diez Pesos Oro Sellado,” linking the 100 Pesos paper denomination to a gold-referenced monetary formula. In the unstable economy of 1912, that wording gained renewed importance. The state overprint did not erase the old Banco de la República identity; it layered new public authority on top of it. The result was a hybrid instrument: a 1907 Waterlow & Sons banknote, still visibly carrying its original bank design and gold-value language, but now formally brought under the 1912 state emission. Paraguay 1907 - Banco de la República 100 Pesos Issued Note (Pick 159)

At the center of its importance is the monetary clause printed on the face: “Moneda Nacional ó Diez Pesos Oro Sellado.” This wording gave the 100 Pesos paper denomination a formal relationship to ten sealed gold pesos. In 1907, that phrase belonged to the legal and monetary structure of the original Banco de la República issue. By 1912, during Paraguay’s political and fiscal crisis, the same phrase became central to the meaning of the emergency overprints. Uruguay 1896 - Banco de la Republica Oriental del Uruguay 10 Pesos Serie A Sepia Photographic Proof Pair, Dated 29 April 1925 (Pick Unlisted)

The denomination is correctly lettered DIEZ PESOS across the center of the face. This correct spelling is an important diagnostic distinction from the related black photographic proof design, where the denomination was mistakenly engraved as DEIZ PESOS. The sepia proof therefore preserves a separate and corrected design state rather than merely a tonal duplicate of the black photographic pair. Read more →

Uruguay 1896 - Banco de la Republica Oriental del Uruguay 10 Pesos Series A Photographic Proof Pair (Pick Unlisted)

The central denomination contains a visible lettering error: it reads DEIZ PESOS instead of the correct Spanish spelling DIEZ PESOS. This transposition of the letters I and E is preserved clearly in the photographic proof and forms one of the most important diagnostic features of this Bradbury, Wilkinson and Company Limited design. The erroneous DEIZ PESOS wording is integrated into a dense ornamental composition of leaves, scrollwork, guilloche structures, repeated value devices, and layered security patterns. Uruguay 1871 - Banco de Londres y Rio de la Plata 10 Pesos Face Proof (Pick S239p)

The obverse is dominated by a large engraved portrait of Christopher Columbus at left and a standing child vignette at right, both enclosed within elaborate ornamental frames. BANCO DE LONDRES Y RIO DE LA PLATA appears prominently across the upper central field with DIEZ PESOS NACIONALES beneath. The denomination is repeated through the large DIEZ PESOS panel at center and numerous numerical 10 devices placed around the border and within the ornamental structure. The lower payment language refers to Moneda Nacional en Oro sellado and cites the law of 23 de Junio de 1862, placing the note within the legal and monetary framework under which the bank operated in Montevideo. Uruguay 1883 - Banco de Londres y Rio de la Plata 10 Pesos Specimen (Pick S242s)

The obverse combines formal banking text with an elaborate multicolor security design. BANCO DE LONDRES Y RIO DE LA PLATA appears prominently across the upper central field, with DIEZ PESOS NACIONALES directly beneath. The payment promise reads PAGAREMOS AL PORTADOR Y A LA VISTA, followed by the large central denomination DIEZ PESOS. The lower monetary language refers to Moneda Nacional en Oro sellado and cites the law of 23 de Junio de 1862.
