Unissued 20 Pounds Circular Note produced for Thomas Cook and Son during the early twentieth century, representing a finished operational instrument from the firm's international travel-payment system. Serial numbered No. 1163727 S and preserved without completion of the issue date, holder information, payment details, endorsement, or redemption markings, the note was subsequently rendered non-negotiable through extensive punch cancellation and deliberate clipping of the lower-right corner.
The face is headed by a large THOMAS COOK & SON title extending across the upper central field. Beneath it appears the serial number No. 1163727 S at the left, the place of issue London in script at center, and a partially preprinted date field beginning with 19 at the right. The remaining date was intended to be completed when the instrument entered use, so the printed 19 does not establish the precise year of production. Immediately below, the principal title reads CIRCULAR NOTE FOR TWENTY POUNDS, with a large script £20 denomination positioned prominently at the right.
The principal payment text begins with "Gentlemen" and explains the operating mechanism of the Circular Note. The instrument was to be presented by a holder whose signature corresponded with the firm's accompanying Letter of Indication, which was to be produced together with the note. The paying correspondent was requested to pay the value of TWENTY POUNDS at the current rate of exchange against proper endorsement. This language records the essential security structure of the Thomas Cook Circular Note system: portable value supported by a separate identification document, signature comparison, controlled presentation, and redemption through designated banking correspondents.
At the left of the central field appears the instruction GOOD FOR TWELVE MONTHS FROM DATE, establishing a defined period during which the note could be presented. The lower portion addresses "Messieurs the Bankers mentioned in our Letter of Indication," directly linking the instrument to Thomas Cook and Son's international correspondent network. The issuing authority is repeated prominently at lower center as FOR THOMAS COOK & SON.
The security design is executed principally in blue and pale green, with a dense repeating lettered background, ornamental guilloche framing, scrollwork, and multiple denomination devices. Both side panels are built around vertically arranged ornamental structures containing repeated 20 numerals and TWENTY value tablets. The large £20 at upper right and the written TWENTY POUNDS within the payment wording reinforce the denomination across numerical, textual, and ornamental elements. The composition combines formal payment instructions with an elaborate anti-alteration security design appropriate to a high-value private financial instrument.
The note carries a normal production serial number and no SPECIMEN overprint or other specimen designation. Its uncompleted operational fields, absence of holder or bank endorsements, and completely blank reverse indicate that it never completed the normal issue and redemption cycle. The circular punch cancellations across the lower portion and the clipped lower-right corner are deliberate invalidation features applied after the note was withdrawn from usable stock, permanently preventing further negotiation.
The piece appears to represent genuine numbered operational stock prepared for customer issue, subsequently withdrawn unused and formally cancelled. It preserves the actual form in which a 20 Pounds Thomas Cook and Son Circular Note existed within the firm's working payment system. This gives the note particular historical importance because cancelled operational instruments had little practical reason to be retained once their financial function had ended.
The reverse is entirely blank apart from the openings created by the face punch cancellations. There are no endorsements, correspondent-bank stamps, payment notations, holder signatures, manuscript entries, or redemption marks. The absence of any reverse processing is consistent with a note that remained unused before withdrawal and cancellation.
The 20 Pounds denomination is particularly significant within the surviving Thomas Cook Circular Note record. Lower denominations, including 5 Pounds and 10 Pounds, are represented by surviving Thomas Cook material, while no second example of this 20 Pounds Circular Note has presently been identified within the reviewed catalog, auction, grading, or published reference record. The denomination is independently documented within the Thomas Cook payment system by the later 5 Pounds Travellers Cheque specimen in this collection, whose printed denomination information states that related instruments were also issued in 10 Pounds and 20 Pounds values.

As an unissued and formally cancelled 20 Pounds Circular Note with normal production serial numbering, complete payment language, Letter of Indication instructions, twelve-month validity wording, blank reverse, and no known second documented example, this piece occupies a reference-level position within the history of Thomas Cook and Son's private financial instruments. It is an R9 Extremely Rare and presently unique surviving example of the 20 Pounds denomination within the early international Circular Note system, documenting the evolution of secure portable money before the standardized travellers cheque became the dominant form of twentieth-century travel finance.
