Bank of New Zealand — complete pre-Reserve specimen lineage (1870–1926)

New Zealand’s banknotes did not begin life as a government monopoly. Through the 19th and early 20th century, a handful of trading banks issued their own notes under statute, with the Bank of New Zealand (BNZ, founded 1861) the most prominent by reach and volume. In that world, a note was both a promise and a billboard: it had to clear in distant towns, win public trust after periodic credit shocks, and meet London’s standards when bills were settled across the Empire.

Educational overview of three pre-Federation Australian specimens

The pre-Federation era in Australia produced some of the most distinctive private banknotes of the British colonial world. Before 1910, individual banks issued their own paper money under state charters, a system that mirrored Scotland’s model but operated under the practical realities of a continent still forming its national identity. Each bank relied on established London printers—Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co., or Skipper & East, for example—to design, engrave, and supply currency that would both circulate locally and project credibility to an emerging economy.

The Remainder Problem: Why Unissued Notes Survive

Why did unissued notes exist at all? Because 19th-century banking was slow, local, and paper-heavy. Notes were printed in large batches — sometimes years ahead of need — to save on plate setup costs and shipping. A regional bank might order 20,000 impressions of a £1 plate, sign 5,000, and store the rest in its vault. If business slowed, those blanks stayed untouched. When the bank merged or failed, the paper still existed, sitting in chests marked “Cancelled stock.” In theory, they were to be pulped. In practice, few people were paid to do it.
