Description and research notes
Specimen £1 of the Bank of Ireland Limited, dated 1 January 1977 and printed by Thomas De La Rue. The obverse features the youthful portrait at right with a shield row and Celtic motifs along the base. SPECIMEN overprint and De La Rue oval handstamps appear at left and right, and the note bears the contemporary manager signature J. G. McClay.
This PR101 variety is part of the modern polymer‑era ancestor set of Northern Irish paper £1 notes, showing the move to brighter inks and machine‑readable layout while retaining heraldic panels and microlettered backgrounds.
PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated confirms attractive color and clean paper. A sharp, institution‑issued specimen from the late paper era of Ireland's £1 denomination.
