Description and research notes

This Ulster Bank Limited 1 Pound uncut sheet of 3 proofs belongs to the Northern Ireland Issue design group of 1929-1934 and survives in a format not represented by the standard single-note Pick listing. It is cataloged here as Pick Unlisted, while the individual proof design is associated with Pick 306p. The sheet preserves three proof impressions before separation, making it a broad production artifact rather than a single cut proof.

The sheet shows the full engraved structure of the Ulster Bank Limited 1 Pound design, including the formal bank title, ornamental borderwork, large denomination panels, Belfast wording, and the central maritime and industrial vignette. The promise-to-pay layout is present in proof-stage form, with the engraved obligation text, denomination structure, and bank identity arranged across each subject. The object preserves the design before final administrative completion, retaining the printed architecture of the note in its larger production format.

The specimen perforation is a central feature of the sheet. It marks the three proof impressions as controlled non-payable production material while retaining the printed design for approval, reference, and archival use. In uncut sheet form, this feature is especially important because the sheet preserves the multi-subject production layout before separation. The spacing, margins, paper structure, and relationship between the three impressions remain visible, giving the object a production context that cannot be seen on an individual cut proof.

The sheet is printed on Ulster Bank Limited watermarked security paper. This watermark is part of the physical identity of the proof material and adds an important technical layer beyond the printed face. The uncut sheet of 3 preserves the more complete production format, with the watermark embedded across a larger uncut surface rather than confined to a separated note.

Ulster Bank Limited belonged to the private banknote tradition of Ireland and Northern Ireland, where commercial banks continued to issue their own notes under regulated authority. As an uncut sheet of 3 proofs on Ulster Bank Limited watermarked security paper, this object stands as a rare and unusually complete survivor of the Pick 306p design family and supports its classification as an R9 Extremely Rare proof artifact.
