Description and research notes

Back-side photographic proof of the twenty francs issue of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, dated 29 July 1965, representing an early reverse design concept later replaced during the development of the series. Produced for internal evaluation, this monochrome proof is mounted on archival cardstock and preserves a composition that differs fundamentally from the finalized reverse adopted for the 1970 issue.

The central vignette presents a river landscape with a cargo vessel in the foreground and a row of tall trees lining the bank, extending toward a simplified rural horizon. This composition reflects a more illustrative and less mechanically structured approach compared to the later adopted design. The spatial construction is relatively open, with broader tonal areas and reduced density of fine-line security elements.

Unlike the finalized reverse design—featuring the more complex valley, dam, and engineered river control structures associated with the issued Pick 54—this early concept emphasizes a pastoral scene with minimal architectural intervention. The absence of tightly integrated guilloche framing and reduced ornamental precision indicate that the reverse design had not yet reached its final technical configuration.

Typography and denomination placement remain stable in position but lack the refined integration and structural tension observed in later proofs. The border treatment is simpler, and the relationship between central imagery and denomination markers remains visually less cohesive, reinforcing the exploratory nature of this stage.

A handwritten production date "29.7.65" is present in the lower margin, linking this proof directly to the corresponding face photographic proof from the same review session. Together, these pieces document a unified but ultimately discarded design direction, capturing both sides of the note before the transition to the final reverse concept.

This proof predates the decisive redesign that introduced the more technically complex and visually structured reverse used in the issued series. As such, it represents not a variation of the final design, but a separate concept that was replaced during development.

Within the broader Luxembourg collection, this piece stands as the earliest recorded reverse design stage in the 1965–1970 evolution. When viewed alongside the later August and November photographic proofs, it provides direct evidence of a complete conceptual shift in reverse imagery and structural design.

The note is preserved in Choice New condition, mounted on original cardstock, retaining strong photographic detail and clear visibility of the initial design concept prior to its replacement.
