Description and research notes
Back-side photographic proof of the twenty francs issue of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, dated 24 November 1965, representing the finalized reverse layout aligned with the design later adopted for the issued note (Pick 54). Printed in monochrome and mounted on archival cardstock, this example captures the reverse composition at the point of final structural approval.
The central vignette depicts the engineered river valley with integrated water control structures, matching the configuration used in the issued series. The composition demonstrates full resolution of spatial hierarchy, with clear separation between foreground, midground, and background elements, supported by a tightly integrated ornamental framework.
Compared to the earlier July photographic proof, which featured an entirely different boat-based landscape concept, this example reflects the completed redesign of the reverse. The August transitional proofs introduced this new direction, but by November the composition has reached full precision, with refined tonal balance and complete integration of guilloche elements.
Typography and denomination placement are fully stabilized, aligning precisely with the final issued configuration. The border structure, vignette framing, and internal spacing exhibit the controlled geometry characteristic of late-stage banknote design prepared for production.
A handwritten production date "24.11.65" appears in the lower margin, linking this proof directly to the corresponding face photographic proof from the same review session. Together, these pieces document the complete design at the moment of final approval prior to production.
Within the broader Luxembourg collection, this proof represents the definitive reverse reference for the 1965–1970 design evolution. It confirms that the reverse layout had reached its final form prior to issuance, completing the progression from the abandoned July concept through the August transition to full structural resolution.
The note is preserved in Very Choice New condition, mounted on original cardstock, retaining strong photographic clarity and full visibility of the finalized design elements.
