Description and research notes

Face-side photographic proof of the twenty francs issue of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, produced in August 1965 during the transitional phase between the initial design concept and the finalized layout later adopted for the issued series. Printed in monochrome and mounted on archival cardstock, this example documents the stage at which the new design direction had been established but not yet fully resolved.

The note carries serial number A000000 in dual placement, consistent with internal photographic proof formatting. The portrait of Grand Duke Jean reflects a significant shift from the earlier July concept, now rendered with stronger definition and closer alignment to the final engraved interpretation. However, the portrait remains oversized relative to the final design, occupying a larger proportion of the note and compressing surrounding elements.

Typography and denomination structure have moved toward their final configuration, with "VINGT FRANCS" and the surrounding ornamental framework more closely integrated than in the earlier concept stage. Despite this progress, spatial balance remains imperfect, with the enlarged portrait affecting the proportional relationship between text, watermark field, and decorative elements.

The signature area presents two signatures, indicating that administrative elements were already being incorporated into the design framework. However, their presence does not imply finalization, as the overall composition was still undergoing adjustment. The coexistence of near-final typography with unresolved portrait scaling highlights the iterative nature of the design process.

This proof marks the decisive transition away from the abandoned July concept, introducing the structural foundation that would ultimately define the issued note. At this stage, the core layout direction is established, but refinement of proportions and visual balance is still in progress.

Within the broader Luxembourg collection, this piece represents the intermediate phase of the 1965 design evolution. Positioned between the July concept proofs and the November finalized layout proofs, it documents the transformation from exploratory design to controlled banknote architecture.

The note is preserved in Choice New condition, mounted on original cardstock, retaining strong photographic clarity and evidence of its role within the transitional design phase.
