Description and research notes
Face-side photographic proof of the fifty francs note of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, dated March 20, 1971 as indicated on the grading holder, representing the finalized obverse layout prior to production. Printed in monochrome and mounted on archival cardstock, this example preserves the design at the stage where all structural and compositional elements had been resolved.
The note carries serial number A000000 in dual placement, consistent with internal photographic proof conventions. The portrait of Grand Duke Jean is presented within a fully integrated guilloche framework, with denomination and typography positioned in their final configuration. The spatial balance between portrait, ornamental structure, and watermark field reflects a completed layout prepared for production.
The signature configuration corresponds to the Signature A system later cataloged as Pick 55a, establishing this proof as part of the A-branch design sequence prior to the introduction of the alternate Signature B variant.
A handwritten annotation reading "18.5.72" is present in the lower margin of the mounted proof, executed in pen and positioned along the bottom edge. This annotation represents a later handling or internal reference mark and is physically distinct from the dated reference provided on the grading holder.
Within the broader Luxembourg collection, this proof represents the definitive obverse reference for the fifty francs denomination in its Signature A configuration, capturing the completed design immediately prior to color trials, specimen preparation, and final issuance.
The note is preserved in Very Choice New condition, mounted on original cardstock, retaining strong photographic clarity and full visibility of all design elements.
