Description and research notes
Specimen of the twenty francs note of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg dated 1966, produced as part of the official reference and control series for the Grand Duke Jean issue within the Belgian Luxembourg Economic Union framework. Printed by Thomas De La Rue and Company, London, this piece represents the approved design in its non-circulating validation format.
The obverse presents Grand Duke Jean in formal military attire, engraved in precise intaglio with finely controlled line density and consistent ink distribution. The portrait is set within a complex guilloche structure designed to maintain both visual authority and mechanical clarity, reflecting the balance between national identity and functional currency requirements during the period. The multitone background and watermark field are fully developed, matching the issued format in all structural aspects.
The reverse design, featuring a detailed Moselle river landscape with agricultural and transport elements, reinforces the note’s connection to Luxembourg’s geographic and economic identity, rendered with the same precision and compositional discipline as the obverse portrait.
Serial number A000000 is printed in red in standard specimen format. A horizontal SPECIMEN overprint is applied across the lower center of the design, accompanied by dual punch-hole cancellations through the signature area, permanently invalidating the note for circulation. These features confirm its role as an official reference piece distributed for institutional, banking, and printing control purposes.
Within the broader Luxembourg series, the specimen format represents the finalized approval stage following photographic proofs and production trials. It preserves the design exactly as intended for circulation while clearly distinguishing itself as a non-issuable example. As such, it serves as the direct technical counterpart to the issued notes and a critical link within the full production chain documented across the set.
The note remains in Choice Uncirculated condition with strong paper integrity and full preservation of the overprint, punch cancellations, and original printing detail.
