Description and research notes

The 500 Denari banknote issued in 1996 forms part of the first modern currency series of the Republic of Macedonia following independence in 1991. Introduced by the National Bank of the Republic of Macedonia as part of the country’s early monetary stabilization program, the series established the visual identity and security standards of the newly independent state’s paper currency. Production was entrusted to Thomas De La Rue & Company Limited in London, whose security printing expertise shaped both the artistic and technical structure of the notes.

The dominant element of the design is the so-called Golden Death Mask discovered at the archaeological site of Trebeništa near Ohrid, dating to the 6th century BCE. The funerary mask is one of the most important artifacts associated with the ancient cultures of the Macedonian region. Its stylized facial features translate effectively into engraved linework and form the central vignette of the denomination, connecting the modern currency with the deep archaeological heritage of the region.

The security architecture of the banknote follows the standard late-twentieth-century De La Rue production model. A multicolor offset background establishes the geometric structure of the design, over which a finely engraved intaglio key plate provides the principal vignette and denomination elements. The raised tactile surface produced by the intaglio process contrasts with the smooth offset base, creating both visual depth and a tactile authentication feature.

Additional security devices integrated into the note include the Golden Mask watermark embedded within the paper, a metallic security thread, microtext inscriptions, see-through register alignment elements, and dense guilloche patterns designed to resist photographic or digital reproduction. Together these components form a layered defense system characteristic of modern banknote engineering.

Within the production chain documented by related pieces in this series, the issued banknote represents the final stage of development. Earlier steps included vignette die proofs of the Golden Mask engraving and De La Rue printer specimens carrying specimen control markings. The present note demonstrates the completed integration of engraving, offset color structure, and security features in the form released for circulation.

Certified PMG 66 EPQ Gem Uncirculated, this example preserves the note in exceptional original condition. The paper retains full brightness, the intaglio impression remains sharply defined, and the layered printing structure can be studied exactly as produced. As the mid-denomination of the inaugural Macedonian series, the 500 Denari played a central role in everyday circulation while embodying the cultural and historical narrative chosen to represent the new national currency.
