This Prefix A approval specimen of the 20 Złotych issue documents the formal authorization stage of the occupation-era monetary system administered by Bank Emisyjny w Polsce. Dated Kraków, 1 March 1940, the note represents the fully accepted production standard from which circulation printing was initiated. It is a completed, signed, and institutionally approved banknote retained as a reference at the moment when monetary authority was translated into physical form.

The specimen preserves the final engraving, layout, and security structure intended for public use. Control numbering rendered entirely as zeros identifies the sheet as an internal approval reference used during production validation. This numbering anchors the note within the printing workflow without altering its status as a finished design.

The banknote measures approximately 173 × 91 millimeters, corresponding to the production format adopted for this denomination in the 1940 series.

The artistic program is deliberate and historically anchored. Allegorical figures flank the central denomination panel in a restrained classical idiom that continues the visual language of late interwar Polish banknotes. Rather than introducing a new aesthetic, the issuing authority preserved familiar compositional structures associated with order, continuity, and institutional legitimacy. In the context of occupation, this was a calculated design choice: authority was asserted through familiarity rather than disruption.

The obverse is defined by the portrait of Emilia Plater, one of the most prominent female figures of Polish national memory. Her image draws directly from nineteenth-century patriotic iconography associated with the November Uprising, where she emerged as a symbol of civic duty, sacrifice, and resistance. The inclusion of Plater on the front of a major denomination reflects a continuation of pre-war Polish practices that elevated historical figures representing national identity rather than contemporary political power.

By placing Emilia Plater on the obverse, the design anchors the note’s visual authority in historical legitimacy. Her presence functioned as a stabilizing cultural reference, reinforcing continuity with earlier Polish state symbolism while avoiding overt political messaging within the occupied monetary system.

Portrait elements and allegorical symbolism were executed under the direction of Leonard Sowiński, whose work followed established Polish engraving standards. Dense guilloche networks, layered ornamental frames, and carefully balanced typography reflect continuity of technical expertise rather than improvisation. The visual discipline of Polish security printing remained intact despite the political rupture.

Production of the 20 Złotych involved a multi-stage workflow. Master engraving and early printing were carried out by Giesecke & Devrient, with subsequent production phases transferred to Zakłady Graficzne "Sztuka" in Kraków as wartime logistics evolved. This approval specimen belongs to the earliest organizational phase, before decentralization and material substitutions affected later output.

Kraków’s designation as the place of issue is structurally significant. With Warsaw removed from its pre-war financial role, Kraków became the administrative and monetary center of the General Government. Approval material bearing the Kraków imprint belongs to the first stabilized phase of occupation governance, when provisional arrangements gave way to formalized institutional systems.

As an approval specimen, this note records a decision rather than circulation. It captures the exact point at which design, signatures, paper, and security features were accepted as suitable for public use. Its survival is archival rather than intentional, preserving a direct record of how monetary authority was constructed and implemented during the earliest phase of occupation.
