Description and research notes

A full-sheet specimen of the Banco de Zaragoza 500 reales vellón dated 14 May 1857, Serie C, serial number 08703. Classified as Pick S453s, this complete production sheet preserves the entire original plate configuration: the upper header panel used for alignment and plate control, the left talón containing the audit serial, and the full banknote plate. Specimens surviving in full-sheet format are exceptionally rare for Spanish provincial banks of the 1850s. Their survival in untrimmed, archival form is nearly unprecedented.

The Banco de Zaragoza was established in 1857 under the banking reforms of the Law of January 28, 1856, which authorized several provincial banks to issue their own currency. The bank implemented a strict denomination-to-series system: Serie A = 100 reales, Serie B = 200 reales, Serie C = 500 reales, Serie D = 1000 reales, Serie E = 2000 reales, Serie F = 4000 reales. Its issuing privilege ended in 1874, when all provincial banks were absorbed into the Banco de España. Because most circulating notes were redeemed and destroyed during consolidation, surviving examples—whether issued or specimen—are extremely rare.

Pick S453s designates the specimen variety for this denomination, separate from the issued form (S453a) and from any remainder material. The engraving reflects the Madrid-school aesthetic: a detailed Spanish coat of arms, complex acanthus ornamentation, and the formal promise text payable in Zaragoza. The talón repeats the number 08703, confirming internal pairing typical of 19th-century Spanish emission control.

Rarity is extreme. PMG census entries for the broader Pick S453 family combine notes from multiple unrelated banks and do not represent Banco de Zaragoza. No full-sheet S453s specimens from Zaragoza are recorded in PMG archives or in the catalog history of major Spanish auctions (Aureo & Calicó, Cayón, Soler y Llach, Vico). This complete production sheet, preserving header, talón, and banknote together, qualifies as R8+ and may be unique.

This specimen forms a matched pair with the issued Serie C note No. 08785 (Pick S453a) also in the collection (see item 'spain-1857-banco-de-zaragoza-500-reales-serie-c-08785-issued-note'), documenting both the production-sheet specimen and the circulation-authorized form of the 500 reales vellón emission.
