Specimen full sheet Serie A No. 23327 Banco de Zaragoza 100 reales vellón with header and talón, Pick S451s, 1 May 1857

Spain 1857 - Banco de Zaragoza 100 Reales Vellón Serie A Specimen Full Sheet with Header and Talón No. 23327 (Pick S451s)

Founded in 1857 under the banking reforms introduced by the Law of January 28, 1856, the Banco de Zaragoza was one of several short-lived provincial issuing banks authorized to produce their own currency. The bank adopted a strict denomination-to-series structure: Serie A = 100 reales, Serie B = 200 reales, Serie C = 500 reales, Serie D = 1000 reales, Serie E = 2000 reales, Serie F = 4000 reales. Operating only until its absorption into the Banco de España in 1874, the bank issued comparatively small volumes, and most circulating notes were redeemed and destroyed during the centralisation of Spanish monetary issuance. Spain 1857 - Banco de Zaragoza 200 Reales Vellón Serie B Specimen Full Sheet with Header and Talón No. 07887 (Pick S452s)

A full-sheet specimen of the Banco de Zaragoza 200 reales vellón dated 14 May 1857, Serie B, serial number 07887, classified as Pick S452s. This complete production sheet preserves the entire printing layout: the upper header panel used for alignment and plate control, the left talón for internal audit numbering, and the full banknote plate. Full-sheet specimens from Spanish provincial banks in the 1850s are exceptionally rare, and survivals with both header and talón intact are almost unknown. Read more →

Spain 1857 - Banco de Zaragoza 500 Reales Vellón Serie C Specimen Full Sheet with Header and Talón No. 08703 (Pick S453s)

A full-sheet specimen of the Banco de Zaragoza 500 reales vellón dated 14 May 1857, Serie C, serial number 08703. Classified as Pick S453s, this complete production sheet preserves the entire original plate configuration: the upper header panel used for alignment and plate control, the left talón containing the audit serial, and the full banknote plate. Specimens surviving in full-sheet format are exceptionally rare for Spanish provincial banks of the 1850s. Their survival in untrimmed, archival form is nearly unprecedented. Read more →

Spain 1857 - Banco de Zaragoza 100 Reales Vellón Serie A Issued Note No. 23322 (Pick S451b)

A fully issued Serie A example of the Banco de Zaragoza 100 reales vellón dated 1 May 1857, serial number 23322. This is a true issued banknote classified as Pick S451b, not a remainder or specimen. Issued Zaragoza notes from 1857 are among the rarest Spanish provincial banknotes, with only two S451b examples recorded by PMG to date and very few known in private or institutional collections. Issued Banco de Zaragoza 500 reales vellón, Serie C No. 08785, Pick S453a, 14 May 1857

Spain 1857 - Banco de Zaragoza 500 Reales Vellón Serie C Issued Note No. 08785 (Pick S453a)

Rarity is extremely high. PMG lists only one graded example for S453a, but this listing aggregates notes from multiple provincial banks and does not confirm Zaragoza attribution. No Zaragoza-issued 500 reales vellón notes are recorded in major Spanish auction archives, suggesting that only a handful of true S453a-issued examples may survive worldwide. This piece, with clear signatures, strong detail, and well-preserved surface, qualifies as R8. Read more →

Specimen Banco de Zaragoza 200 reales vellón, Serie B No. 07958, Pick S452s, 14 May 1857

Spain 1857 - Banco de Zaragoza 200 Reales Vellón Serie B Issued Note No. 07958 (Pick S4532s)

Serial 07958 places this specimen within the same Serie B emission as the full-sheet specimen No. 07887 held in the collection. The combination of a full production sheet specimen and a standard-format specimen from the same emission is exceptionally rare in Spanish provincial material. Because no issued 200 reales vellón notes from Zaragoza are confirmed to survive, specimen examples represent the primary documentation of this type. Read more →

Spain 1857 - Banco de Zaragoza 2000 Reales Vellón Serie E Issued Note No. 00589 (Pick S455)

True issued examples of Pick S455 are exceptionally rare, and no meaningful number appears in Spanish auction archives over the past several decades. Based on observed survivors (including both pieces in this collection), this note qualifies as R8-an extremely rare, institution-level artifact of Spain’s provincial banking era. Read more →

Issued Banco de Zaragoza 2000 reales vellón, Serie E No. 00500, Pick S455, 14 May 1857

Spain 1857 - Banco de Zaragoza 2000 Reales Vellón Serie E Issued Note No. 00500 (Pick S455)

The Banco de Zaragoza, active from 1857 to 1874, produced one of the most architecturally consistent and visually elaborate provincial banknote series in Spain. Its structured emission of reales de vellón comprised Serie A (100 reales), Serie B (200 reales), Serie C (500 reales), Serie D (1000 reales), Serie E (2000 reales), and Serie F (4000 reales). Of all these, issued Serie E notes are among the hardest to obtain; almost all known survivors show the characteristic circular cancellation punch used by the bank to void redeemed notes. Issued Banco de Zaragoza 2000 reales vellón, Serie E No. 00286, Pick S455, Zaragoza 14 May 1857, cancellation punch

Spain 1857 - Banco de Zaragoza 2000 Reales Vellón Serie E Issued Note No. 00286 (Pick S455)

The Banco de Zaragoza was one of the provincial banks authorised to issue paper currency during Spain’s short-lived liberal banking period following the 1856 banking reforms. Within this framework, Zaragoza structured its issues by denomination using alphabetical series, culminating in Serie E for 2000 reales vellón and Serie F for 4000 reales vellón. These higher denominations were intended primarily for institutional and wholesale transactions rather than everyday circulation, which accounts for their extreme attrition. Read more →

Spain 1857 - Banco de Zaragoza 2000 Reales Vellón Serie E Issued Consecutive Pair No. 00031–00032 (Pick S455)

The Banco de Zaragoza operated during Spain’s brief liberal banking period following the 1856 reforms, when select provincial banks were authorised to issue their own circulating paper currency. Zaragoza structured its emissions by denomination through alphabetic series, with Serie E corresponding to 2000 reales vellón. These high-denomination notes were intended for large commercial settlements and institutional use, resulting in extremely low survival rates once redemption and withdrawal policies were enforced.
