Description and research notes

The Series 1934A 10 Dollars North Africa Silver Certificate, cataloged as Friedberg 2309, belongs to the distinctive emergency issues produced during the Second World War. Commonly known as the 'North Africa' notes, these certificates were printed with a yellow Treasury seal rather than the standard blue seal of Silver Certificates. The color modification was deliberate — a wartime security measure designed so that, if large quantities were captured by enemy forces, they could be immediately declared invalid.

Issued primarily for use by United States military personnel operating in North Africa and the Mediterranean theater, these notes reflect the logistical and financial complexities of global conflict. The yellow seal served as a rapid visual identifier, allowing for swift demonetization if necessary. Although the emergency cancellation authority was never exercised on a wide scale, the series stands as a tangible artifact of wartime contingency planning.

The obverse features the familiar portrait of Alexander Hamilton, framed by the classical small-size layout adopted in 1928. The reverse retains the traditional allegorical vignette representing Agriculture and Industry, engraved in layered intaglio characteristic of Bureau of Engraving and Printing craftsmanship. The New York Federal Reserve District, indicated by the letter B, anchors the issue within the Federal Reserve System’s production framework.

Graded PCGS 35 Very Fine, this example exhibits honest circulation consistent with mid-grade preservation, while retaining strong design clarity and an intact yellow Treasury seal. As part of the North Africa emergency series, the note represents a historically significant subtype within United States Silver Certificates — combining standard domestic design with a unique wartime modification that distinguishes it immediately from conventional blue-seal issues.

North Africa Silver Certificates remain among the most recognizable and historically contextualized emergency issues of United States paper money. Their distinct coloration and wartime origin elevate them beyond ordinary circulation notes, marking them as artifacts of both monetary history and military logistics.
