Description and research notes

This 20 Centesimos note was issued by the Banco Nacional de la Republica Oriental del Uruguay under the monetary framework dated 25 de Agosto de 1887 and printed in London by Waterlow and Sons. The base note corresponds to the mechanically signed production phase classified as Pick A88c. It bears an additional red SORIANO branch overprint applied after central issuance.

Banco Nacional operated a centralized engraving and mechanical signature system in Montevideo, followed by allocation to departmental branches for regulated circulation. Branch overprints functioned as administrative control devices, identifying notes distributed to specific regional offices and reinforcing accounting oversight within the provincial network. The overprint reads SORIANO exactly as printed on the note and represents the official departmental designation used at the time of application.

The obverse presents the seated Mercury allegory at left, symbolizing commerce and monetary circulation, engraved in refined intaglio within a layered green and black guilloche framework. At right appears the national coat of arms, reinforcing sovereign authority within the monetary structure. The mechanically reproduced signatures of Vittone, Bugliam, and Gimenez confirm classification within the A88c emission.

Serial D099758 belongs to the D-prefix distribution of the mechanically signed production phase. The uniformity of signature placement and stroke confirms mechanical reproduction rather than hand application. The red SORIANO overprint crosses central design elements and partially intersects signatures, demonstrating post-production validation at the branch level.

The reverse retains the dense green guilloche security field characteristic of Waterlow and Sons export engraving of the 1880s. The underlying printed design remains identical to non-overprinted A88c examples, confirming that the branch marking represents a secondary administrative layer rather than a separate printing.

As a mechanically signed national issue bearing a SORIANO branch overprint, this note documents the structured operational hierarchy of Uruguay's late nineteenth century banking system: centralized printing and signature refinement followed by departmental distribution control through localized overprint application.
