Uncut vertical sheet of three fractional notes from the Bank of the State of South Carolina in Charleston, dated February 1, 1863. The pane contains one 10 cents and two 15 cents notes. This 5 Pesos vale de hacienda was issued by the Republic of Honduras under the decree of 2 March 1863 and represents one of the earliest surviving treasury obligations of the Honduran republic. During the mid-nineteenth century Honduras lacked a formal banking system and frequently relied on treasury vales such as this to finance government operations and supplement the limited supply of metallic currency. This note is a Series of 1929 Type 1 ten-dollar issue, carrying the vertical charter numbers 1221 at both margins and the red-brown Treasury seal at right. Type 1s were the first of the small-size nationals introduced that year, still bearing the ornate "National Currency" title and traditional layout derived from earlier large-size designs.
