The Federal Bank of Australia commenced operations in 1881 and expanded aggressively during the speculative land-boom years of the late nineteenth century. Its collapse during the catastrophic banking crisis of 1893 resulted in the rapid liquidation of assets and the withdrawal, redemption, and destruction of nearly all circulating notes. An exceptional and academically important survival from the experimental phase of Italy’s early post-unification banking era, this 250 Lire specimen from the short-lived Banca Italo-Germanica, cataloged as Pick S976s, represents one of the rarest and most ambitious private note-issuing projects attempted in Rome during the 1870s. No issued examples of this type are known to exist, and all scholarship indicates that the bank’s banknote program collapsed before any notes entered circulation, leaving only a microscopic number of presentation pulls, proofs, or internal printer’s archive sheets. This PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated example is the sole graded specimen in the PMG census, making it both Top Pop and Only Pop.

The Banco Nacional de Bolivia, founded in 1872, became the most important commercial bank in the country by the turn of the 20th century, serving as a de facto national issuing authority before Bolivia developed a centralized reserve structure. Its notes were critical to trade and daily transactions, yet most circulated examples suffered heavy attrition given the harsh climate, limited banking infrastructure, and chronic political instability. The Cerro Rico vignette carried particular symbolic weight: while it implied national prosperity and backed the promise of value, by 1904 the collapse of world silver prices had already undermined the very foundation of Bolivia’s fiscal stability.
