The Farmers National Bank of Sussex, New Jersey, traces its charter to May 20 1865 when it opened in nearby Deckertown, a small agricultural hub in Sussex County. Chartered as number 1221, it succeeded the pre-existing Farmers Bank and quickly became the county’s central financial institution. The town adopted the name Sussex in 1903, prompting the bank’s title change the same year. For seventy years, the bank’s management remained a family affair: three generations of the Holbert and Margarum families served as cashiers and presidents, guiding the institution from the Civil War era through the Great Depression.
