Egypt 1914–1915 - Egyptian Red Crescent Society (Khedivial Era Membership Receipts, Two-Document Set)

Both receipts bear the early bilingual institutional seal of the Société du Croissant Rouge Egyptien struck in deep rose-violet ink. The seal shows a central crescent surrounding Arabic text, enclosed within a French outer ring. The 1914 impression is struck slightly to the right margin, while the 1915 example shows a cleaner, heavier strike at upper right with visible embossing pressure into the paper. Read more →

The document carries a full, sharply struck royal Greek consular seal in red, displaying the crowned cross-and-shield emblem of the Kingdom of Greece surrounded by the bilingual Greek–French inscription identifying the Cairo consulate. The seal overlaps the manuscript lines, confirming in-period issuance. Two large fountain-pen signatures of Greek consular officers appear beneath the text, including the acting official who authenticated the testimonial.

The large-format 5/– Consular Service adhesive was reserved for significant legal acts such as notarisation, registration, attestations, and inheritance or identity confirmations. The stamp retains its full engine-turned frame and clear portrait vignette, with the tie-cancel crossing both paper and adhesive. The Arabic consular clerk notation at lower left represents the standard bilingual annotation procedure used by British consulates in Egypt during the Khedivial period.

Invoices from early carriage and automobile workshops before 1910 rarely survive. Most were discarded after daily use, damaged by workshop conditions, or lost during later relocations as the automotive industry expanded. Shops like El Komi that invested in illustrated bilingual stationery are especially uncommon. This 1908 example-preserving its lithographed header, bilingual service listing, handwritten commercial text, and operational workshop seal-stands as one of the finest surviving documents from Egypt’s earliest automotive-era craft workshops and the transition from carriage to motor transport.
