Bank of New Zealand — complete pre-Reserve specimen lineage (1870–1926)

Historical frame. Trading banks (BNZ among them) issued notes under New Zealand statute throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand Act, 1933 (operations 1934) ended private note issue and unified design and security under a single authority. This lineage captures the last decades before that shift—when London engraving and colonial banking needs met on New Zealand paper.

The Remainder Problem: Why Unissued Notes Survive

Why didn’t governments demand destruction? Many tried, few succeeded. British colonial administrations, for instance, required banks to submit proof of cancelled stock, but oversight was lax. Remote colonies in the Caribbean or Pacific were rarely visited by inspectors. In Canada, old chartered banks often left their paper in storage until the turn of the century, when the Bank of Canada absorbed them — by then, many remainders had already trickled into private hands. In Australia and New Zealand, printers in London simply held unsold or unpaid-for stock after clients collapsed, later selling them to dealers once the legal claim expired.

Why were specimens made at all? In the 19th century, every new note design required official approval—first by the bank’s directors, then by colonial auditors or government observers. Printers produced specimen proofs to demonstrate engraving quality and layout, and these were kept in secure reference files or distributed to correspondents as record copies. Specimens ensured that future print orders matched the approved plate and that forgeries could be compared against an official model.
