Mauritius 1940 - Government of Mauritius 1 Rupee Uncut Pair Remainder (Pick 26r1)

Remainders document the production stage between plate approval and issued stock. They were never signed or released and typically survive with cancellations that prevent later misuse. On this pair the inks remain strong, margins are even, and alignment between the two impressions shows tight register consistent with London-era colonial contract work. The four punch cancellations additionally preserve evidence of the control procedure applied to material that remained outside normal currency circulation. Read more →

1923 Banco di Roma Cairo issued cheque with Capitoline Wolf emblem and engraved Roman header

Egypt 1923 - Banco di Roma, Cairo Branch Issued Cheque

Original Banco di Roma cheque issued in Cairo on 17 November 1923, printed on cream security paper with a richly engraved Roman header characteristic of interwar Italian banknote and cheque design. At the upper left, within an elaborate vertical cartouche of scrollwork and rosettes, appears the iconic Capitoline Wolf suckling Romulus and Remus. This emblem served as the visual shorthand for Banco di Roma's institutional identity and its projection of Italian national symbolism abroad. The engraving is attributed to the Ditta Farani–Roma printing house, whose small imprint is placed discreetly at the lower margin, consistent with commercial security work of the period.

The National Bank of Egypt occupied a unique position in the country’s financial system from its founding in 1898 until the mid-20th century. Before Egypt had a formal central bank, NBE performed a hybrid function: issuing banknotes, managing treasury operations, handling government deposits, facilitating currency stability, and simultaneously operating as a commercial bank serving merchants, plantation estates, trading firms, foreign residents, and government contractors. Its cheque forms were therefore both negotiable instruments and extensions of an emerging proto-central-banking infrastructure.

Rather than serving as a monetary instrument, this piece functions as documentary evidence of how colonial banking institutions planned, approved, and archived designs that in some cases never reached the public.
