New Zealand 1934 - The Reserve Bank of New Zealand 10 Shillings Photographic Face Proof (Pick 154p)

The note belongs to the inaugural Reserve Bank series commonly known as the "Lefeaux series", named for Leslie Lefeaux, the institution’s first Governor. Prior to 1934 New Zealand’s paper money had been issued by private trading banks. The establishment of the Reserve Bank introduced a unified national currency system, and the new banknotes were commissioned from Thomas De La Rue & Company Limited in London, one of the world’s leading security printers.

By the early 1920s, Thomas Cook & Son had fully transitioned from a travel agency into a global financial intermediary, operating one of the most extensive private payment networks in the world. Rupee-denominated travellers cheques were a key component of this system, allowing British and colonial travelers to draw local currency securely without transporting coin or bullion. The 100 Rupees denomination functioned as a high-value instrument within the Indian Empire, suited to extended travel and commercial expenditure.

The note features a finely engraved portrait of the Māori rangatira Tamati Waka Nene (1780–1871), leader of Ngāpuhi and an early ally of British settlement-one of the first indigenous statesmen ever depicted on a Commonwealth banknote. Surrounding the portrait are complex guilloché patterns and a two-tone lilac-and-ochre tint underprint demonstrating the peak of Bradbury Wilkinson’s late-Edwardian plate craftsmanship.
