Portugal 1799 - Real Erario 20000 Reis Apólice, Original Issue, No Overprint, Lisboa No. 37723

Counterfeiting became a major problem for the apolice system. Common paper, relatively simple designs, and handmade printing plates made imitation possible. A Treasury record from 1819 listed 42 false apolices worth 552,600 reis; three were altered genuine pieces, while the others were printed forgeries. By 1821, official records listed counterfeit apolices valued at more than 477 million reis.
