Poland 1936 - 50 Zlotych Jan Henryk Dąbrowski (Pick 78a, Miłczak 77a–b)

Despite completion and delivery to Bank Polski, the note never entered regular peacetime circulation. Approximately two thousand examples were produced, but the outbreak of war in September 1939 halted the planned release. During the ensuing cash shortage, a limited quantity was reportedly issued under emergency conditions, primarily in northern Poland. Progressive proofs are seldom encountered outside official archives. They were never intended for collectors, and their survival provides a rare, forensic view of how the Bank Polski and PWPW approached design refinement during Poland’s 1930s modernization campaign. Together with the finished Dąbrowski note, this proof completes the narrative - from concept to currency, from artistic ideal to national symbol. Poland 1919 - 1000 Zlotych Unissued Note (Pick 59a)

The note’s design is a tour de force of neobaroque ornamentation: elaborate guilloches, scrolling acanthus motifs, and a commanding layout that conveyed prestige. Like the smaller denominations, it features Tadeusz Kosciuszko on the obverse, reinforcing his role as the symbolic figurehead of the 1919 series. Measuring 181 × 111 mm, it impresses with both scale and detail, and its watermark also carries Kosciuszko’s likeness as a security device.

Its principal significance lies in the CH prefix. Within the 1994 series, the 50 Zlotych is the only denomination whose London-printed serial sequence advanced into the C-prefix range. The London runs of the 10 Zlotych, 20 Zlotych, 100 Zlotych, and 200 Zlotych ended within the A or B ranges, while later domestic production by PWPW in Warsaw began with D prefixes. The partial C-prefix sequence therefore forms a distinct production interval found only on the London-printed 50 Zlotych.
