Deutsche Orientbank was one of the most important German financial institutions operating abroad before World War II, with branches across the Middle East, the Balkans, and North Africa. Its Cairo office played a significant role in trade finance, project support, and foreign exchange operations during Egypt’s interwar economic expansion, particularly in sectors tied to import–export commerce and infrastructure. Egypt 1918 - Banque Belge pour l’Étranger, Cairo Branch Issued Cheque

Original cheque issued by the Cairo branch of Banque Belge pour l'Étranger on 2 September 1918, produced during the final phase of the First World War. The form is printed on light cream security stock with a richly engraved Art Nouveau header. Along the left margin runs a vertical ornamental cartouche enclosing the bank’s interlocking monogram and the legend BANQUE BELGE POUR L'ÉTRANGER – LE CAIRE, framed by a list of the bank’s principal branches in BRUXELLES, LONDRES, ROTTERDAM, LE CAIRE, ALEXANDRIE, SHANGHAI, PEKIN and TIENTSIN. The wide geographical spread reflects the institution’s pre-war ambition to operate as a global correspondent house linking European capital with Asian and Middle Eastern commercial centers.

Banco di Roma played a significant role in the financial and commercial world of interwar Egypt. By the 1910s and 1920s, Italy maintained a broad expatriate community in Alexandria and Cairo, with active merchant houses, construction firms, shipping agents, agricultural exporters, contractors, and artisans. To serve this community and strengthen Italy’s economic footprint in the region, Banco di Roma established branches across the eastern Mediterranean-Alexandria, Cairo, Beirut, Smyrna-acting as both a retail bank and a conduit between Italian capital markets and Near Eastern commerce. Its Cairo branch offered current accounts, trade financing, documentary clearing, foreign exchange services, remittances to Italy, and the management of contractors' payrolls engaged in infrastructure and building projects.

Original National Bank of Egypt cheque issued in Cairo on 23 March 1921, printed on pale cream security paper with an elaborate blue guilloche frame. The border consists of finely interlaced geometric linework characteristic of early twentieth-century British-engraved financial stationery. The upper section displays the bold NATIONAL BANK OF EGYPT title flanked by twin rosettes, presenting the institution in its combined role as both Egypt’s de facto state bank and the country’s dominant commercial bank during this period. At bottom appears the engraved line 'Form A S No. 41' together with the printer’s plate impression at far right, referencing a standardized series used across NBE branches in the early 1920s.
