As an unissued remainder, this note was never completed with manuscript signatures, serials, or cashier validations. Instead, it shows wide margins, crisp plate detail, and period ink burn caused by iron-gall annotations during internal inventorying at the bank or printer. The 'ink burn' noted by PMG is a natural oxidation effect from 19th-century ink formulas and is frequently found on surviving remainders from Mauritius and other tropical colonies where humidity accelerated the chemical reaction. Mauritius 1940 - Government of Mauritius 1 Rupee Uncut Pair Remainder (Pick 26r1)

Remainders document the production stage between plate approval and issued stock. They were never signed or released and typically survive with cancellations that prevent later misuse. On this pair the inks remain strong, margins are even, and alignment between the two impressions shows tight register consistent with London-era colonial contract work. The four punch cancellations additionally preserve evidence of the control procedure applied to material that remained outside normal currency circulation.

The survival of five pounds remainders such as this example is directly linked to the bank’s collapse. Archival evidence and later historical accounts indicate that stocks of printed but unissued notes were not destroyed during the winding-up process. As a result, remainder material escaped the normal cycle of circulation, redemption, and withdrawal, preserving high-denomination examples that would otherwise have been lost.

This 5 Pesos Bolivianos remainder was prepared in 1867 for Oxandaburu y Garvino of Gualeguaychu, Entre Rios, during an early period of private and provincial paper-money issuance in Argentina. The note preserves its original left counterfoil together with the complete unsigned banknote face and carries serial number 009148 on both sections, directly linking the retained accounting stub with the principal note.
