The town adopted the name Sussex in 1903, prompting the bank’s title change the same year. For seventy years, the bank’s management remained a family affair: three generations of the Holbert and Margarum families served as cashiers and presidents, guiding the institution from the Civil War era through the Great Depression. United States 1929 – 10 Dollars Type 1 National Bank Note – The First National Bank of Taylorville, Illinois Charter 3579 (Fr.1801-1)

Organized in 1886, The First National Bank of Taylorville had issued large-size notes since the 19th century. By 1929, it was headed by president Roy A. Johnston and cashier C.S. Stokes. When the Treasury’s conversion to the smaller 1929 format began, each active national bank received serial ranges for new issues. Taylorville’s allocated blocks-E000212A to F000212A for $10s and C000064A to F000064A for $20s-were officially listed as 'not issued.' Yet this note’s lower serial number confirms that at least part of the earliest batch was printed and released locally before the bank closed. Read more →

United States 1902 – 20 Dollars Large Size Plain Back National Bank Note – The First National Bank of Taylorville, Illinois Charter 3579 (Fr.650-652)

Production details for this charter are instructive. The bank’s large-size notes were printed in 3x10-20 sheet layouts, with one twenty paired to three tens, which inherently limited the number of twenties produced relative to tens. By the time the Series 1929 conversion began, Taylorville closed so early that its small-size allocation was essentially not issued, making any note from this charter-large or small-important for state and national collections alike. Organized in May 1927, The Thomas County National Bank of Colby, Kansas, was one of the last institutions chartered under the National Banking Act, entering the system just as small-town banks faced increasing consolidation pressures. Chartered as number 13076, it was led by cashier N. Reimers and president W. D. Ferguson, whose engraved signatures appear boldly in dark ink on this note. Despite its late founding date, the bank issued both large-size 1902 Plain Backs and small-size 1929 series notes before the National system’s absorption into the FDIC framework in the mid-1930s.
