Fiji 1942 - 1 Pound Government of Fiji Overprint on New Zealand £1 (Pick 45c)

The overprint effectively transformed the New Zealand note into a locally restricted wartime currency while preserving the underlying engraved design. The original elements remain visible, including the kiwi vignette at left, the New Zealand coat of arms at center, and the portrait of Māori King Tāwhiao at right. Red serial numbers prefixed 'FI/O' were applied to distinguish the converted notes from their New Zealand counterparts and to integrate them into Fiji’s emergency circulation system. Read more →

New Zealand 1934 - The Reserve Bank of New Zealand 10 Shillings Issued Note (Pick 154)

The obverse combines symbolic and cultural elements that helped define the visual identity of New Zealand’s new national currency. At left appears the kiwi, an iconic native bird that had already become a widely recognized national symbol. At center stands the coat of arms of New Zealand supported by allegorical figures representing agriculture and industry. At right appears the portrait of Tāwhiao, the second Māori King and leader of the King Movement, acknowledging the historical and cultural significance of Māori leadership in the country’s development.

The 1967 one hundred dollars specimen represents the inaugural issue of New Zealand’s decimal currency system at its highest denomination, issued during the ND (1967–1968) period under the signature of Roderick Ninian Fleming as Chief Cashier. Fleming’s tenure was limited to the opening phase of decimalization, making his signature exclusive to the earliest production window of the new monetary system.
