The 50 Mil Réis embodied the young Republic’s drive to project prestige after the fall of the monarchy. Portugal 1917 - Banco de Portugal 50 Mil Réis Front Progressive Proof (Pick 110pp1)

The EPQ designation is exceptional at this grade, indicating fully original paper quality and unaltered archival surfaces-critical for proofs that typically show handling or trimming. Only two examples of Pick 110pp1 appear in the PMG census, placing this among the rarest surviving Portuguese progressive proofs. Each intermediate pull was meant to be destroyed once calibration finished; very few escaped the printer’s vaults. This proof documents the engraver’s first successful alignment of the plate and thus predates the issued specimen by a critical production stage. Read more →

United States 1929 - Uncut Pair of $5 Type 2 National Bank Notes with 1944 Bank Letter – The Thomas County National Bank of Colby, Kansas Charter 13076 W.D. Ferguson Provenance (Friedberg 1800-1)

Each note bears the brown Treasury seal, blue charter numbers, and printed facsimile signatures of cashier Charles A. Schuetz and president W. D. Ferguson. Serial numbers A011097 and A011098 confirm consecutive placement on the same sheet before cutting. The pair remains uncut and perfectly aligned, exhibiting fresh ink, sharp embossing, and untouched paper surfaces-proof of careful preservation within the bank’s own files. The reverse displays brilliant green ink and the Lincoln Memorial vignette, consistent with the standardized 1929 design.
