The note’s design is a tour de force of neobaroque ornamentation: elaborate guilloches, scrolling acanthus motifs, and a commanding layout that conveyed prestige. Like the smaller denominations, it features Tadeusz Kosciuszko on the obverse, reinforcing his role as the symbolic figurehead of the 1919 series. Poland 1936 - 50 Zlotych Jan Henryk Dąbrowski (Pick 78a, Miłczak 77a–b)

The choice of date was deliberate. Issued on Independence Day, the note was designed to function not merely as currency but as a visual declaration of sovereignty. The obverse portrait depicts General Dąbrowski (1755–1818), founder of the Polish Legions in Italy and a central figure of Polish national memory, immortalized in the opening lines of the national anthem. His inclusion placed the banknote firmly within a narrative of military tradition, civic duty, and national perseverance.

The notes were printed in London by Waterlow & Sons Limited and held in reserve while the Polish marka remained the circulating currency. This 1919-dated issue entered circulation on 28 April 1924, when the new zloty was introduced and Bank Polski began operations as the central issuing institution. The delayed release connects the note directly with both the restoration of Polish independence and the stabilization of the national currency after the marka hyperinflation.

Designed, engraved, and printed in 1919, the issue was held in reserve while the Polish marka remained the circulating currency. The notes entered public circulation in 1924 during the monetary reform introduced under Prime Minister Wladyslaw Grabski. The new zloty replaced the inflation-damaged marka, and Bank Polski assumed its role as the central issuing institution.
