Historically, this issue stands at the crossroads between private banknote autonomy and centralized national control. Ten years after this proof was produced, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand assumed exclusive note-issuing authority in 1934. These late BNZ proofs therefore represent the final expression of a 60-year private-note tradition that began in the 1870s and ended when New Zealand joined the global movement toward nationalized currency systems. The present specimen preserves a particularly complete record of the 1883 10 Pesos production format: counterfoil No. 370500, two corresponding 370500 numbers on the principal note, the separate upper control number 345501, the full engraved face and reverse, original denomination and legal wording, and the complete Bradbury Wilkinson perforated specimen designation. These features make the piece a direct reference artifact for the study of Uruguay's private banking era and Bradbury Wilkinson's South American security-printing work. Read more →
