Egypt 1914–1915 - Egyptian Red Crescent Society (Khedivial Era Membership Receipts, Two-Document Set)

The early administrative years of the Egyptian Red Crescent coincided with rapid political change: the fall of Khedivial rule in 1914, the declaration of the British Protectorate, and Egypt’s entry into the First World War as a strategic logistical base. These shifts placed extraordinary demands on the Society, which expanded its relief operations and formalized its record-keeping practices. Most early papers from this era were consumed by routine operations, destroyed in later reorganizations, or discarded during shifts in premises. The body records the sale of four hardware items described as '4 Seaux vernisés,' with individual price notes and a large diagonal signature confirming receipt of payment. Additional Arabic annotations in brown and black fountain-pen ink appear in the lower section, demonstrating the bilingual bookkeeping characteristic of Cairo's mixed French–Arabic commercial environment. Settlement initials and date confirmations appear at the lower left, with visible ink feathering from period dip-pen usage.

These two adhesives belong to the very first adhesive revenue issue ever used in Egypt. Before this period, all fiscal charges were paid on pre-embossed stamped paper; the introduction of gummed revenue stamps marked the start of a completely new system. Only the 1m and 2m values were produced during this initial experimental rollout, reflecting a short-lived transitional phase with inherently limited printing and distribution. Because early offices routinely discarded or destroyed processed paperwork, full documents from this first generation-especially those retaining multiple values used together as originally intended-survive at extremely low rates.
