Poland 1940 - 500 Zlotych, Series A with Counterfeit Numbering Issued Note (Pick 98a)

Original 500 złotych note of 1 March 1940 issued by the Bank Emisyjny w Polsce, Series A, serial A 1319803. Although the banknote itself is genuine, its serial falls within the 13xxxxx numbering range later associated with diversionary forgeries of the 500 złotych denomination. Together with the 12xxxxx sequence, these numbers became compromised by the appearance of counterfeit notes, making A 1319803 an extremely rare surviving original from a range subsequently targeted for withdrawal. The green 10 Centesimos served as the lower denomination of a two-note series alongside a brown 20 Centesimos. Both were produced in bound counterfoil books, as shown by the wide left margin and binding perforations. Design: single-sided green lithograph with an agricultural harvest scene of field workers cutting and binding grain. The legend DIEZ CENTESIMOS sits in ornate rosettes marked 10, with the Bauer imprint at base. The N in the printed word Numero appears reversed, a minor plate flaw noted in contemporary descriptions. Despite the cancellation, traces of the original pen signature confirm manual validation. Cataloged within the same series as Pick A110a, it demonstrates autograph variety among the earliest 1 Peso emissions and forms a pair with Serial 017385, showing how hand processing preceded printed signatures later in the decade.
