Poland 1936 - 50 Zlotych Jan Henryk Dąbrowski (Pick 78a, Miłczak 77a–b)

Production was carried out at the Państwowa Wytwórnia Papierów Wartościowych in Warsaw. Technical direction was provided by Leon Barański, with artistic supervision by Wacław Borowski and engraving by Włodzimierz Vacek. The note combines offset printing with steel intaglio and features a multitone portrait watermark of Dąbrowski, regarded as one of the finest achievements of Polish papermaking in the interwar period. Vignette proofs such as this were printed directly from the engraved steel die during the approval phase of banknote production. At this stage the printer and issuing bank evaluated the engraving quality, tonal balance, and compositional stability of the central image before transferring the design to working printing plates. Because the proof is taken directly from the die, it preserves the engraving in its pure form, without color layers, guilloche backgrounds, or additional plate elements that would appear in the completed banknote. The planned 20 Zlotych design was significant for Polish banknote history because steel engraving, or staloryt, was used for the first time in Polish banknote production. The portrait of Marynia Połaniecka, after the graphic work of Piotr Stachiewicz, was executed as the central artistic feature of the note. On this sheet, that portrait survives in watermark form, translated into the paper itself as a multitone security image positioned in the unprinted field of the planned banknote. Read more →
