Great Britain c. 1900 - Thomas Cook and Son 20 Pounds Circular Note, Cancelled Unissued Note (Pick Unlisted)

The face is headed by a large THOMAS COOK & SON title extending across the upper central field. Beneath it appears the serial number No. 1163727 S at the left, the place of issue London in script at center, and a partially preprinted date field beginning with 19 at the right. The remaining date was intended to be completed when the instrument entered use, so the printed 19 does not establish the precise year of production. Immediately below, the principal title reads CIRCULAR NOTE FOR TWENTY POUNDS, with a large script £20 denomination positioned prominently at the right. Read more →

Historically, this specimen represents the final appearance of the pre-robbery layout: De La Rue’s guilloché and microtext design with latent numerals, holographic foil stripe, and complex underprint-hallmarks of early twenty-first-century security printing. Survivors are scarce and serve as reference material for the transition between the withdrawn 2004 and the replacement 2005 series. Graded PMG 63 Choice Uncirculated.

Australia 1900 - Bank of New South Wales £10 London Circular Note Specimen (Pick Unlisted)

At the top, the note is titled "The Bank of New South Wales" and "CIRCULAR NOTE for £10 STERLING." London is written beneath the denomination, while the opening instruction directs the instrument to the bankers mentioned in the accompanying Letter of Indication. The main text sets out the method of use, stating that the holder would present the note, the signature would be checked against the Letter of Indication, and payment of ten pounds sterling would be made without deduction at the exchange of the day on London, against the holder's draft on the London office of the bank endorsed on the note.
