1931 - Deutsche Orientbank A.G. Cairo Correspondence Set (Letter, Registered Cover, and Account Statement)

Deutsche Orientbank was one of the most important German financial institutions operating abroad before World War II, with branches across the Middle East, the Balkans, and North Africa. Its Cairo office played a significant role in trade finance, project support, and foreign exchange operations during Egypt’s interwar economic expansion, particularly in sectors tied to import–export commerce and infrastructure. Most administrative paper generated by the bank was destroyed during political upheavals, branch closures, and post-war consolidations, leaving only isolated survivals. Read more →

Egypt 1918 - Banque Belge pour l’Étranger, Cairo Branch Issued Cheque

Original cheque issued by the Cairo branch of Banque Belge pour l'Étranger on 2 September 1918, produced during the final phase of the First World War. The form is printed on light cream security stock with a richly engraved Art Nouveau header. Along the left margin runs a vertical ornamental cartouche enclosing the bank’s interlocking monogram and the legend BANQUE BELGE POUR L'ÉTRANGER – LE CAIRE, framed by a list of the bank’s principal branches in BRUXELLES, LONDRES, ROTTERDAM, LE CAIRE, ALEXANDRIE, SHANGHAI, PEKIN and TIENTSIN. The wide geographical spread reflects the institution’s pre-war ambition to operate as a global correspondent house linking European capital with Asian and Middle Eastern commercial centers. Egypt 1910 - Riches & Mawas, Cairo–Alexandria–Tanta Commercial Draft for 1600 Piastres

High-denomination drafts from Riches & Mawas (such as this 1,600-piastre example) are significantly scarcer than the firm’s smaller-value instruments, as most were redeemed, archived temporarily and destroyed during financial consolidation. Complete examples with intact engraved borders, full manuscript entries and uncut margins are seldom encountered and represent a substantial surviving record of Egypt’s pre–World War I mercantile and intercity credit networks. Egypt 1912 - Compagnie des Bateaux Omnibus (Nile Steamer Illustrated Letterhead)

The printed service list to the left advertises excursions to Sakkara, boat rentals, navigation on Nile and irrigation canals, postal transport, and cargo towing. These offerings reflect the wide operational scope of the Compagnie des Bateaux Omnibus, which by the early 1900s had become one of the principal private river navigation companies serving both tourists and local commerce. At the upper right, the telegraphic address BATOBACLAIRE and telephone numbers DIRECTION 9098 and DEPÔTS 4145 appear in crisp serif type, recording the company's communication infrastructure on the eve of World War I. Egypt 1921 - National Bank of Egypt, Cairo Branch Issued Cheque

By 1921, Egypt’s financial architecture was undergoing rapid transformation. The country had just emerged from World War I, inflationary pressures were reshaping credit markets, and sterling-based trade remained central to commerce. The National Bank of Egypt maintained correspondent relationships with London, Marseille, and Bombay while also managing domestic clearing for a rapidly expanding banking sector that included British, French, Italian, Belgian, and Greek institutions. Egypt 1935 - Palestine & Egypt Lloyd Ltd., Alexandria Agency Letterhead

Documents from these agencies seldom survived. Commercial forwarding firms generated huge volumes of short-lived paperwork-memos, clearances, manifests, booking confirmations, and correspondence-almost all of which were discarded after brief internal use. Surviving examples that include full mastheads, complete branch listings, registration stamps, dated administrative content, and original handwritten signatures are extremely rare. This 14 December 1935 letterhead represents a museum-level artifact from the height of interwar Levant–Egypt maritime commerce, preserving the operational footprint of one of the most important private transport agencies active in the region before World War II. Greece 1949 - Ministry of Foreign Affairs Certified Translation and Legalisation (Volos–Athens)

This document sits within a broader system shaped by the political and administrative climate of post–World War II Greece. Before the widespread availability of private sworn translators and standardized international notarial agreements, the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs maintained an internal Translation and Legalisation Department responsible for producing certified translations and official authentications for use abroad. Municipal or community authorities such as the President of the Community in Volos first certified the original act; only then could an MFA translator in Athens prepare an English version, which finally received ministerial legalization so that foreign courts, consulates, or immigration offices would accept the document as valid.
