Description and research notes

Specimen of the redesigned 2005 Northern Bank £50, printed by Thomas De La Rue and issued under the new Northern Bank Limited branding after the December 2004 robbery. Serial JB000000, watermark Sir Samuel Davidson, and bold red SPECIMEN overprint across the face. This version was part of the printer’s formal reference and approval series prepared for bank and regulator use.

The 2005 issue represented a complete visual break from the withdrawn 2004 design while maintaining the same core portrait of industrialist Sir Samuel C. Davidson (1846-1921). De La Rue tightened security features and color tones to ensure easy differentiation from recalled notes: enhanced microtext, modified guilloché, and a distinct purple-brown palette. These adjustments were introduced to reassure the public that new Northern Bank currency could be fully trusted after the robbery.

This SPECIMEN demonstrates the first finalized print run of the 2005 reissue and is one of the few surviving examples released for institutional reference rather than circulation. Graded PMG 65 EPQ Gem Uncirculated, it stands as the benchmark specimen for Northern Bank’s post-robbery currency reform.
