Description and research notes

Color trial specimen of the fifty francs note of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, representing the Signature A configuration later cataloged as Pick 55a. This example reflects the stage of production in which finalized engraving and layout were combined with experimental color application prior to approval for full issuance.

The note carries serial number A000000 in dual placement and is overprinted SPECIMEN in red across the face. Two circular punch holes are present across the central field, consistent with specimen handling practices during the control and archival process.

The portrait of Grand Duke Jean is fully rendered in its final engraved form, integrated within a complex multicolor guilloche structure. The surrounding ornamental framework demonstrates the transition from monochrome photographic proofs to full chromatic execution, with layered color elements interacting across the background and denomination fields.

Typography, denomination placement, and layout are fully aligned with the finalized production design. The color palette represents a trial stage in which tonal balance, contrast, and print interaction were evaluated prior to mass production.

The signature configuration corresponds to the Signature A system, with signatures of Marcel Schmit (left) and Pierre Werner (right), later cataloged as Pick 55a. This establishes the piece within the A-branch of the fifty francs series prior to the introduction of the alternate Signature B configuration.

Within the broader Luxembourg collection, this piece represents the transition between finalized layout and issued production, preserving the moment at which design was fully realized in color but remained subject to final approval.

The note is preserved in Gem Uncirculated condition with Exceptional Paper Quality, retaining full color integrity, sharp detail, and complete specimen characteristics.
